by Ananda Kannangara The free distribution of 20,000 National Identity Cards (NIC) to flood victims in Ratnapura, Galle, Kalutara, Hambantota and Matara districts will commence on July 18. All flood victims who are registered with the respective Divisional Secretaries will get an opportunity to apply for Identity Cards free of charge under the programme. "This is the first such occasion the department has launched a programme to distribute NICs free ," DRP Commissioner, Wijaya Ranasinghe told the Daily News yesterday. He said that workshops and awareness programmes were held to inform the people in these districts regarding the free ID card distribution programme. "We are now in contact with the Divisional Secretaries and other government officials in the districts, especially in Ratnapura and Kalutara where a large number of people were badly affected," he said. Ranasinghe further said that the required number of NICs could even double since an unprecedented number of people were affected by the floods. "However, the processing and distribution process will take sometime since some important official documents such as the birth certificates of people have been destroyed," he said. Ranasinghe said under such circumstances, the department will have to obtain the assistance of the Gramasevaka Niladaris of the respective areas for the authenticity of persons. "In addition to conducting mobile service programmes, distributing IDs to school children through the principals is another option which will have to be considered to expedite the distribution process," he added. |
