The Ambassador to Japan in Colombo Seiichiro Otsuka, received the first copy of 'Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS) Prevention Guidebook for Communities, Schools and Workplaces' from Kittipan Kanjanapipatkul, the Secretary General of the Colombo Plan Secretariat. This guidebook is funded by the Government of Japan. Seiichiro Otsuka commended the Drug Advisory Programme (DAP) of the Colombo Plan for producing the guidebook on 'ATS Prevention' as the abuse of ATS is gradually becoming a major problem, threatening health, social and economic lives of families, communities and nations in the Asia Pacific region. He also added that this guidebook is very timely as member governments of the Colombo Plan could utilise the guidebook to design and implement effective ATS prevention approaches targeting schools, communities and workplaces. The Secretary General of the Colombo Plan, Kittipan Kanjanapipatkul took the opportunity to thank the Government of Japan and the Japanese Embassy in Colombo for the continued strong support to the Colombo Plan. He also informed the Ambassador Otsuka that the Colombo Plan DAP, with the funds from the Government of Japan has been implementing initiatives to combat the ATS problem that has fast becoming the main drug of choice replacing the traditional drugs - heroin and cannabis in the region, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. |
