India and Sri Lanka have mutually agreed to operate a ferry service between the two countries. "We expect the Indian Port Minister Sinha in Sri Lanka to have a more detailed discussion," he said adding that they have studied several routes and the route between Daunshkody and Thalimannar was found to be the shortest (28 kms) and the cheapest. The proposed ferry service will provide an easy and economical means of travel especially for those who go on pilgrimage to India, the Minister said. He added, "For all these we need to have peace in this country and for that we have to work with national interest at heart". The Minister also said the ferry service between Trincomalee and Muttur was taken over by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority for the convenience of the passengers and the Ports Authority has repaired three ferries at the cost of Rs. five million. Mahaweli Devi and Seruvila II the largest of the three ferries can take over 1000 passengers at a time and the Ports Authority has constructed a restroom for the convenience of the passengers. This rest room provides free night accommodation for the ferry passengers and others especially for those who come from Colombo and other far away places, he said. |
