ITI assistance for essential oil distillation industry The Process and Plant Engineering Division of the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) will conduct a workshop on "Essential oil distillation technology" in order to disseminate the experience gained by the Institute for the better good of the industry, on August 5 at the ITI auditorium at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7. "In Sri Lanka the distillation of essential oils from cinnamon and citronella has a considerable history. However at present, most distillations are carried out on a small-scale, using traditional machinery and technology. Achieving quality standards as required by international markets as well as carrying out the extractions on an economical scale using these traditional methods has become a challenging task. The ITI has been engaged in R&D activities in the field of essential oil distillation for over three decades and as such has gained much expertise in the field", an official of the institute said. The program is designed for personnel who are engaged in the cultivation of cinnamon, citronella, lemon grass and other spices at present and are planning to start an oil distillation industry as well as those who are at present engaged in the industry and seeking new knowledge to improve productivity. The workshop will cover aspects such as preparation of raw materials for oil distillation, distillation technology, operation and maintenance of boilers that are necessary for the distillation and the techniques for production of oils to conform to export quality standards. |
