Fresh efforts to revive peace talks by Ranil Wijayapala and Ranga Jayasuriya Fresh diplomatic efforts to revive the peace talks were afoot yesterday as Japanese Ambassador in Colombo Seiichiro Otsuka met LTTE political chief in Kilinochchi while former Norwegian Ambassador to Colombo Jon Westborg arrived in Sri Lanka. Ambassador Otsuka briefed Thamilselvam on the outcome of the Tokyo Aid Parley in line with the Tokyo declaration which requested the host country to convey the outcome of the conference to the LTTE. "The talks focused on the Tokyo aid parley, Interim administration ,the recent developments on the peace front, and the LTTE's position on the current situation" LTTE spokesman Daya Master told the Daily News. The Ambassador called for the immediate resumption of the peace negotiations, a Japanese embassy spokesman said adding that the meeting was cordial and constructive. Thamilselvam said the Tigers will resume talks after the Government provides a detailed framework of the proposed interim administrative structure. Meanwhile, diplomatic sources said the former Norwegian Ambassador Jon Westborg now in Colombo will play a role of the special peace envoy. Westborg will be in Sri Lanka for 3 -4 weeks, most probably till the Government hands over the proposals on the Interim Administration to the LTTE. "But it depends on how long the Government will take to prepare the detailed framework," sources said. Cabinet Spokesman Prof. G. L. Peiris told the press last week that the Government proposals will be submitted to the LTTE within two weeks. |
