SLMM urges LTTE to remove camp in Kinniya by Ranil Wijayapala The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission yesterday urged the LTTE to remove a camp it was constructing in the government controlled area of Kinniya. The SLMM who conducted an investigation in this connection said this was a violation of the ceasefire agreement. SLMM Spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir told the Daily News last night that the Trincomalee SLMM office filed their final report on the incident after completing a full investigation. The investigation has revealed that the LTTE has commenced construction of this camp after the signing of the ceasefire agreement and the people in the area interviewed by the investigators have confirmed the fact. The SLMM has strongly recommended the LTTE to remove the camp for the benefit of the people and for the continuation of the ceasefire between the Government and the LTTE. Bragadottir said the SLMM officials in Trincomalee have interviewed the people in the area and searched the maps of the area before coming to a final conclusion over the issue. The SLMM commenced investigations into the complaint made by the Sri Lanka Army on Thursday. The Sri Lanka Army also has complained that the LTTE has fired a 40mm hand grenade at random in a provocative move and that the LTTE cadres threatened Army officers not to step into the location where the construction was going on. The SLMM at the first instance lamented over the absence of demarcation lines between the territories held by the government and the LTTE. However, after a lengthy discussion between SLMM Chief Tryggve Teleffsen and Defence Secretary Austin Fernando last Friday, the SLMM recommenced investigations into the incident to come to a final conclusion over the matter. |
