Cooray who has a political career spanning 30 years first began life as a teacher, said Lands Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne who was the chief guest at a felicitation ceremony for Reginald Cooray marking his three decades in politics. The felicitation ceremony was organised by the Kalutara Education Development Foundation. Kalutara UC Opposition Leader M. S. M. Mubarak presided at the ceremony held at the Kalutara Muslim MMV. Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that Mr. Cooray entered Parliament in 1994 and I used to enjoy his speeches in Parliament when I was in the Opposition. He became Chief Minister in 1999. The Minister said that all political parties should unite to solve the ethnic problem for the good of the country and the wellbeing of the people. Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapakse said that Reginald Cooray has done great service to the country in his political career and this is the secret of his success, his services as chief minister has earned him plaudits from the people and politicians alike. Rajapakse said that the time is ripe for all political parties to put away their differences and work for a united, useful and prosperous Sri Lanka. Chief Minister Reginald Cooray said every politician must act with responsibility and dignity so that the people have faith in them. Both major political parties must come to a common understanding and unite to solve the burning issues facing the country. If not the country will have to face dire consequences. Kalutara UC Chairman Dr. W. T. Ariyaratne, Western Provincial Council member Sukumal Perera and M. S. M. Mubarak also spoke. |
