by Kushani Ratnayake A sum of Rs. 1.5 billion is needed to replace the country's entire set of railway tracks, a Railway Official said yesterday. According to him sleepers have not been replaced for several decades and the tracks are in a poor condition due to improper maintenance by the authorities. The carriages too need an overhaul, he said. The 1035 k.m long track in the Island had 375 points with speed restrictions, introduced due to faults in the track. The coaches should be serviced every two years. Over 260 coaches need to be repaired at present. The income derived by the Railway is not at all sufficient. The department is unable to repair every equipment as it is too costly for them to afford. During the past few year there have been 100 derailments approximately. 107 derailments had been reported in the year 2000 and 95 in 2001. Several derailments had occurred during the first few months of this year. |
