Two books, "Selected Sri Lankan short stories volume one and two," containing English translations of short stories of selected Sinhala writers, will be launched at a ceremony at the Library Services and Documentation Board Auditorium, Colombo on July 16 at 3.30 p.m. This is part of a programme to introduce Sinhala Creative Literature to the International reader launched two years ago. Deshabandu Sirisumana Godage proprietor, Godage Book Emporium, Maradana who is handling the programme said:- These two volumes consist of 44 short stories of well-known Sinhala short story writers. The selections have been done by a panel of competent academics and grouped from years 1923-1980 and 1981-1999. The first volume consists of 25 short stories while the second consists of 19 stories. Short stories of those writers involved in writing during this period (who granted us permission for their works to be translated and published) have been included in the two volumes. The order of the translations included in the volumes was based on the date of their first publication. In this era when Sinhala short stories take a prominent place in this region, and we consider that publishing them in English for the benefit of the International English reader is not only a cultural service but also an honour to our writers. Senior Professor Kusuma Karunaratne of the University Colombo, Professor Kulathilake Kumarasinghe of the University of Kelaniya and Mr. Saratha Wijesooriya, Senior Lecturer of the University of Colombo, served on the Editorial Board while Mr. Tennyson Perera, a well-known writer served as the coordinator. |
