Bindunuwewa massacre judgement today

The judgement in the Bindunuwewa massacre case before the specially constituted Trial-at-Bar in the High Court of Colombo, will be delivered today. The verdict was scheduled to be delivered on July 1,2003 and was put off for today.

The Trial-at-Bar comprised High Court Judges Sarath Ambepitiya (President), Eric Basnayake and Upali Abeyratne.

According to the indictment, 41 accused are charged on 83 counts including unlawful assembly, committing the murder of 28 persons and attempted murder of 14 others at the Bindunuwewa Rehabilitation Centre at Bandarawela on October 25,2000.

Earlier, 23 accused were released for lack of evidence.

The testimonies of 58 witnesses were recorded while four of them were remanded for perjury. Three hundred and thirty witnesses were listed to be called to give evidence before the Court.
