A tribute to the Sri Lankan Leopard

For The Leopard - Harith Perera Trust for the conservation of the leopard and other wild cats of Sri Lanka (FTL Trust) today launches their eagerly anticipated book - "For the Leopard". This book is premiered at Odel Unlimited which is the only store that will exclusively distribute the book in Sri Lanka. Being true to Odel's commitment to environmental protection, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be routed back to the publisher - For the Leopard Trust, a press release says.

This book bills itself as a tribute to the Sri Lankan Leopard with a stunning array of photographs that embody all the moods of this beautiful cat. The Leopard Book - as the authors affectionately refer to - systematically catalogues in a photographically elaborate manner the biography of almost the total journey a leopard makes from its birth onwards towards its maturity. The book is clearly a piece by those who love wildlife, wild cats in particular, and want to share the attributes they enjoy watching with others of similar interest or even those as yet uninitiated.

Alongside this pictorial account of the lives of leopards are separate but nonetheless entertaining biographical accounts of each photographer's circumstance, thoughts or conversations at the time they took the picture. Often the stories have a connection with each author's relationship to Harith Perera who inspired the book and, fittingly enough, to whom the book is dedicated. The two tell-written chapters on Leopard Ecology and Genetics by Prof. Charles Santiapillai, Dr. Sriyanie Miththapala and Dr. John Seidensticker gives this book a scientific credibility which would otherwise have been the usual coffee table book. This range of narrative gives the book a quality that a lot of Sri Lankan nature books overlook and opens a further dimension to it.

The feeling of adventure and exotic locales surrounds the reader while the pictures of leopards adds to the majesty of the words and gets readers feeling in awe of the Sri Lankan Leopard which is fast becoming extinct.

The publisher: For the Leopard Harith Perera Trust for the conservation of the Leopard and other wild cats in Sri Lanka (FTL Trust) was registered last year with its fundamental objective being the preservation and conservation of the Sri Lankan Leopard in its natural habitat. Therefore all funds from the sale of this book will go towards this and will include but not be limited to, public awareness programmes, conferences and seminars.

The contributors hope that the photographs and articles in this book inspire more people to appreciate this beautiful cat and raise more awareness and support for its conservation, then the objective of the book would have been achieved.
