International buyers to take part in 'Garment Times Show'

by Ananda Kannangara

A large number of international buyers from Hong Kong, Singapore, India and many other European and US buying offices have confirmed their participation at Sri Lanka's first ever garment exhibition "The Garment Times Show" to be held at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) from September 18 to 21.

SriLankan Airlines has agreed to provide free air tickets to a group of representatives of local garment industries to visit countries they prefer to promote foreign buyers for the exhibition.

"The main objective of holding this international trade exhibition is to promote Sri Lankan garments in foreign countries and also to encourage more foreign buyers for our garments in the years to come," Chief Executive, S.D. Publications (Pvt) Ltd (The publisher of Garment Times Magazine) Sujith Gunawardana told the Daily News.

The opening ceremony of the show will be held on September 18 at 5.00 pm and the exhibition will continue between 10 am and 7.30 pm from September 19 to 21.

"We expect the participation of all garment industries in the country at this exhibition and wish to extend an opportunity from manufacturers of garments to suppliers of fabrics, accessories and machinery to display their products before international buyers," he said Gunawardana said that by holding this exhibition in Sri Lanka for the first time we can show the international buyers the capabilities of the Sri Lankan garment industry through the manufacturer's exhibits, "We are also expected to hold seminars and fashion shows, related to our decade old garment industry to attract buyers during the exhibition" he said.

"We are also focusing attention on local buying offices, representatives and also manufacturers who have direct contacts with foreign agencies, so that we could easily find many more foreign markets to sell our products," he said.

"Although this is a buyer focused show, the fabric, accessories and machinery companies in the suppliers' section will have an opportunity to show the manufacturers what they have to offer to buyers," he said.

The concept of the GTS is to show the buyer the entire garment industry as it is the manufacturing process that the buyer is interested in.

"However we convinced the buyers of the availability of accessories, fabrics, sophisticated machinery and after sales service for that machinery." Gunawardana said that special attention will also be given to fabrics and accessories from India, South East Asia and Sri Lanka.

"It will be an added feature for the visiting buyers and local manufacturers as they can source fabrics and accessories from the suppliers for orders being placed with the manufacturers all under one roof."

Gunawardana said a 60-page comprehensive Pre Show Directory outlining Sri Lanka's tourism and business industry and the garment industry including photographs of each participating garment manufacturer has already been published for promotion purposes and to attract buyers interested in the exhibition.

"Prospective participants can make use of this opportunity by conforming their participation well in advance," he said.
