SLMM to quiz Madan Kumar by Ranga Jayasuriya The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission yesterday declined to hold the LTTE responsible for the killing of Dehiwala Intelligence Unit IP Sunil Tabrew pointing out that the inquiry into the murder has not yet been completed. SLMM Deputy Chief Hagruph Haukland said the Scandinavian monitors had requested access to the alleged killer, Madan Kumar in order to question the suspect on his LTTE connections. "We are in contact with the Police and hopefully will have access to the suspect as soon as possible," Haukland said. Madan Kumar confessed that he was an LTTE pistol gang member trained in Mullaitivu by a Tiger area leader named Ataloran. Madan was assigned to assassinate EPDP leader Douglas Devanandan and IP Tabrew. For the SLMM, Haukland said, a confession by the LTTE cadre is not sufficient to hold the LTTE responsible for the murder. " We will rule following our own inquiry". "I will not speculate. But if the suspect turns out to be an LTTE cadre and he has committed the murder of a police officer, it is a grave violation of the ceasefire agreement by the LTTE," Haukland said. SLMM monitors based in Ampara are inquiring into the murder of EPRLF member Pakyarasa Kumaranadan gunned down at point-blank range by two suspected LTTE cadres in Sammanthurai. An EPRLF spokesman accused the Tigers of the latest assassination and said with the murder of Kumaranadan, the Tigers had assassinated nine EPRLF members during the ceasefire. The University Teachers for Human Rights (Jaffna) last week accused the Tigers of a spree of political assassinations and said the disarmament of non-LTTE political groups was an "innocent misjudgment". |
