Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the Government has launched a special development programme to remedy shortcomings in the education and health sectors. These two vital sectors had suffered some setback in the past, since funds earmarked for them had been diverted for military expenditure warranted by nearly two decades of war. The Prime Minister was addressing a jana-hamuwa which followed the opening of a two-storeyed administrative unit built at the Ampara Base Hospital at a cost of Rs. 70 million recently. The Prime Minister who emphasised the need for proper management practices specially in institutions catering to public needs said cleanliness had severely deteriorated in certain hospitals which had not been properly managed in the past. He noted that the Ampara Base Hospital had a very pleasing environment and an efficient administration due to proper management and thanked Medical Superintendent Dr. Lankatilleke Jayasinghe for his dedicated efforts to ensure efficiency at the hospital. Health, Nutrition and Welfare Minister P. Dayaratne said a special Presidential Task Force had developed Ampara Hospital at a cost of Rs. 150 million. A further Rs. 100 million was needed to effect the balance development work. He said his ministry has already formulated plans to develop all hospitals in the North and East at a cost of Rs. 400 million. Plans are also afoot to provide a modern fully equipped hospital for each district, he added. Buddhasasana, Justice, Law Reform and National Integration Minister W. J. M. Lokubandara, Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku and Digamadulla District MP Myown Musthaffa were also present on the occasion. |
