by Indeewara Thilakarathne Shanmugasundaram Ragupathy alias Tilakan, an LTTE activist who was found guilty of all charges against him including launching an attack on the Elara navy camp in Karainagar, was yesterday sentenced to death by High Court Judge of Colombo Sarath Ambepitiya . The verdict was on the basis of the confession made by the convict to the police under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act after a voir dire inquiry that proved that the convict made the confession voluntarily. Shanmugasundaram was charged with launching an attack on Elara navy camp in Karainagar along with a group of 500 persons led by the LTTE leader Anjalian between August 1, 1990 and May 29, 1991 in Karainagar area. Winyagamurthy appeared for the convict Shanmugasundaram while State Counsel Navaratne Marasinghe appeared for the prosecution. |
