The Sri Lanka Economic Association was strengthened in 2000 with the amalgamation of the Sri Lankan Association of Economists which existed in parallel with it, since 1985.

With more than 400 members, at present, it has a clear and coherent agenda, drawing on the wide and varied experience of its diverse membership of economists and allied professionals drawn from the academia, the government, the private sector, research institutions and NGOs in the country.

Its primary goal is to provide a forum for discussion and dissemination of knowledge on economic issues of topical relevance facing the Sri Lankan economy and global economic trends. It also expects to be a think-tank on socio-economic problems facing Sri Lanka from time to time.

Prof. Indraratna who was unanimously elected the President this year, is Emeritus Professor of Economics of the University of Colombo and a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka and Past (1998) General President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science.

He was the founder General Secretary of SLEA. He was also during the last fifteen months before he took over as President, SLEA, serving the country as the Chairman of the Fair Trading Commission. Under Prof. Indraratna's leadership the SLEA Management Council hopes to build on the good work done by the previous Councils.
