CSE in record breaking bull run

The Colombo Bourse became one of the most attractive stock exchanges in Asia over the last couple of weeks following a record breaking bull run. This week the bull run continued for the third consecutive day yesterday, which pushed its turnover to an impressive Rs. 1.5 billion.

Globally the stock exchanges have been active following a global economic recovery and successful peace initiatives in several regions. In yesterday's trading banking became the most vibrant sector to contribute over 50% to the market turnover.

Local investors took a larger share of over 80% of total trading activities yesterday. Some of the major parcels of shares traded yesterday included: Aitken Spence (322,100), AMW (538,500), Asia Capital (2.58 m), Asian Hotel (1.6 m), Bairaha Farms (855,900), Blue Diamonds (452,200), Caltex (452,200), Ceylinco Sec (251,600), Ceylinco Seylan (165,200), Colombo Land (320, 500), Commercial Bank (255,400), Distilleries (1.5m), DFCC (423,000), Dockyard (105,600), Grain Elevators (842,900),HNB (1.05m), HNB non voting (365,500), JKH ((1.6m), Kelani Tyres (387,500), Kelani Valley (468,800), Lanka Hospitals (6.4 m), Lanka Ventures (225,200), Lanka Walltile (509,800), Merchant Bank (827,200), NDB (1.3m), Nations Trust (1m), NDB Bank (3.77m), Sampath (338,400), Seylan Bank (524,100), Telecom (2.9m), Tokyo Cement (181,700) and Vanik (388,800).

The top five gainers of the day included Ferntea Ltd, Talawakelle, Bogawantalawa, CFI and Lanka Cement.

Hemas sold 6 million shares of Apollo and a foreign investor bought 4 million while EPF, HNB and Commercial Bank together bought the balance 2 million shares. Apollo is expected to release strong financial results for its first full financial year. A major slice of HNB was bought by Elgin fund, which has been active on the market for the last few weeks.

Several companies announced dividends - Associated Electrical (15% interim), Sathosa Motors (7.5% first and final), On'ally Holdings (6.5% final) and Asiri Hospitals (7.5% interim).
