by Sandasen Marasinghe A Police Constable of the Colombo City Traffic who suffered critical head injuries after being knocked down by a car succumbed to his injuries at the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital on Friday. The incident occurred near the Dickmans Road junction on Havelock road on Tuesday around 10.45 p.m. PC Roshan Sujeewa Maddumage (27), a witness who was on duty with the victim M. M. Jagath Divitotawela (28) of Divitotawela, Welimada stated that Jagath signalled a speeding car which came from the direction of Thummulla, to halt. The car however veered to one side and knocked down the PC and fled without stopping. The PC was thrown a distance of about 23 metres by the impact. His T-56 machine gun which struck on the bonnet of the car was later found near a lamp post near the bus stand. The witness further said that he informed about the incident to two PCs of the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) who were present near the scene at the time. The PCs had traced the car at Murugan Place, Wellawatta. The two PCs of the TID who arrested the driver of the car brought him to the scene of the incident. The injured police constable was rushed to the Colombo National Hospital by a PSD jeep which was passing by. PC Sujeewa continuing his evidence said that he was checking a three-wheeler at the time of the incident. His colleague was looking in the direction of Thummulla. Their motorbike was on the pavement. This was revealed at an inquest held before the Additional City Coroner M. Ashroff Rumy. M. M. Samarasinghe (53) father of the victim also gave evidence. JMO Dr. K. A. S. Kodikara held the post-mortem. The Additional City Coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death due to head injuries and instructed the police to take Jayakrishnan Murusadanam (19) of Wellawatta, the driver of the car into custody.
