Trincomalee correspondent Trincomalee district MP R. Sampanthan (TULF) who participated as the chief guest at the Trincomalee district Mahapola Higher Education Scholarships awards ceremony held at the Rajakeeya Vidyaloka National School said the late Lalith Athulathmudali inaugurated the Mahapola higher education scholarship trust fund taking into consideration the financial difficulties he faced when he went to the Oxford University for higher education. He said in this country only a few out of the large number of pupils who pass GCE A/L examination were selected to enter the Universities for higher education and even a smaller number of students were selected to receive the Mahapola scholarship awards. Continuing Sampanthan said in most of the Universities in this country there are continuous student struggles, strikes and disturbances except at the Jaffna University, where the students concentrate more on studies. Every student eligible to receive Mahapola higher education scholarship awards should make the best use of the opportunity. Those studying in Universities should not forget that they have an obligation by the country. Trincomalee district MP M. K. A. D. S. Gunawardhana said the President having come to know that the Development Lottery Board which provides 50% of its income for the Mahapola higher education scholarship trust fund is to be privatised, took over the Board by her in order to see that university students are not deprived of the Mahapola scholarships. Trincomalee district MP K. M. Thawfeek said the educated people are above the politicians elected by the people. Those who enter the universities and follow higher education have a duty by their country. Secretary, North East Provincial Ministry of Education K. Thiyagalingam said that late Lalith Athulathmudali inaugurated the Mahapola higher education scholarship trust fund mainly to help students from low income families entering universities. District Secretary N. P. K. Nelumdeniya welcomed the guests and Divisional Secretary, Morawewa, H. W. Yasaratna proposed the vote of thanks. |
