by Manjula Fernando

Police was called in on friday to handle a bloody clash between two student factions at the Kelaniya university.

The clash erupted allegedly between two pro-JVP and anti-JVP student groups around 5.30 pm on Friday. University sources said they were still investigating the reason for the clash in which several students received serious injuries due to assault.

Sources said the incident could not have been connected with student union election since it was held three months ago. He said there were no outside involvements in the incident.

The semester of the university ended on Thursday and the students had been given two weeks study leave ahead of examinations.

University Vice Chancellor Prof. Tillekeratne said the situation was brought under control within hours of the incident. A team of police officers was deployed at the university on Friday.
