by Nadira Gunatilleke The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has set up School Child Protection Committees in seven selected schools in the Colombo district as a model project, an NCPA spokesman said. He said that according to the teachers and parents, school children in those schools are more disciplined than the students in other schools in Colombo. This model project was implemented on a concept of NCPA Chairman Harendra de Silva to educate the students, teachers and parents on child protection and child's rights. At the beginning, teachers and parents opposed establishing, such Child Protection Committees in schools saying that the children would become stubborn and their discipline will drop. But these committees make the children aware of their responsibilities. The committees also provide leadership training and personality development to them. The School Child Protection Committees also discourage imposing corporal punishment on students and promote other suitable methods to punish them when necessary. These committees help the students to escape from being abused, he added. |
