New boats for Royal oarsmen from USA

by Richard Dwight

Boats, presently here bring to mind floods, and the rescue operations thereof, but to the oarsmen of the Royal College rowing team, boats amongst other things, has primarily become synonymous with rowing.

Adding much muscle and strength to the oarsmen of Royal this year, especially in the pairs event, will be the two new elegant looking, sleek Vespoli 'pair' boats brought down from the States.

This has become a reality through the well meaning efforts of the Royal College Old Boys Association in the US who spent as much as US $ 10,000 (approximately rupees one million) to purchase the two boats, with the college assisting to pay the duty locally here.

The two newly acquired boats, which undoubtedly will pep up the oarsmen of Royal, was most fittingly launched last Tuesday at the Colombo Rowing Club.

The launch took place amidst a large gathering, amongst whom were the Principal of Royal H.L.B. Gomes, Asst. Principal Royal Ranjit Senanayake, President ARASL Deva Henry and Captain of Boats CRC, Lakmal Wickramage - who witnessed the past president of the ARASL Rohan Fernando pairing up with Talal Shums in one boat and Usman Fatharally and Asiri Abhayaratne pairing of in the other.

Royal College oarsmen who have been in the forefront of rowing, are training hard for the rowing nationals in August and will be engaged later on in the battle of the blues, against S. Thomas'.

The team is being coached by Hiran Doranagama.
