Trinity out to retain De Saram Shield

by Chris Dhambarage

Trinity College Kandy will be hoping to retain the Canon R. S. de Saram Shield for the second successive year when they take on arch rivals S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia in their annual inter school rugby encounter at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place today.

The kick off will be at 4.45 p.m after the under 17 fixture. The Trinitians scored a stunning 36-6 win last year at the Pallekele stadium after having lost to the Thomians in the previous four years. This time however Trinity College are fielding a more experienced side and have already made an impact in the current inter school rugby season.

Their performance against the reigning Milo 'A' division league champions St. Peter's College was easily the best so far where they figured in a thrilling 20 all draw. Last week too they came out with a pleasing performance before going down 17-26 to the formidable Isipatana outfit. Trinity are of course vying for honours in the Milo division two league tournament and they had the better of Vidyartha 22-3 in their opening fixture.

S. Thomas' College too have experienced mixed fortunes this year and are determined to redeem their lost prestige. They started the season by defeating St. Joseph's College 26-12 which helped them to retain the Lady Jayatilleke Shield for the third successive year.

But they suffered a shock 7-8 defeat at the hands of Ananda in their next outing before recovering to beat Dharmaraja College Kandy 43-12. The series tally stands at 14 wins to Trinity and 10 to S. Thomas with one match ending in a draw. Former S. Thomas' College captain and former President of the Old Thomian Rugby Football Union Nihal Samarasinghe will be the chief guest. The teams: S. Thomas': Sanka Wickremasinghe. Isuru Fernando, B. S. Fernando, Dinal de Silva, A. Karthelis (captain), P. Jansz, Namal Rajapakse, P. Jayaprakash, H. M. Siriwardena and D. Fox, W. Thajudeen, Mithila Illangakoon, A. Kohonna, S. Samarasinghe, M. Majeed. Trinity: M. Vidanagamage, M. Muthalib, T. Kumara, M. Manikkana, D. Senanayake, B. N. R. Fernando, D. Senarath, M. Maddumapatabendi (captain), S. Jayasundera, A. Peiris, N. Guruge, M. Muneer, I. Ainaff, U. Stephen, S. Kumara.
