Any political force opposing peace effort will be rejected - ex-minister

Hanwella Group Correspondent

Former Minister Indika Gunawardena said that any political force opposing the country's peace effort would be rejected by the masses in future.

He was addressing a ceremony under the theme 'Sivu Wasaka Gaman Maga' held recently at Hanwella Rajasinghe MMV to mark the four years in office of Western Province Industries, Social Services, Probation and Childcare services, Fisheries and Tourism Minister Mahesh Almeida as a provincial councillor.

He said that the masses had suffered the torments of the North East war for two decades. What the people today want peace more than anything else as they have suffered enough, he said. He said that the slightest doubt in them of a political party trying to oppose peace would no doubt result in the defeat of such a party, he said.

The ex-minister said that in the recent past confrontational politics was the talking point of many politicians. But little is spoken about it now.

Therefore, both President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should focus their attention on ending confrontational politics he said.

Western Province Opposition leader Kithsiri Kahatapitiya (UNP) said that the President and the Prime Minister was committed to peace. But when we get off political platforms people ask us various questions on the crisis between the executive and the legislature. We respond to them but they are not satisfied with our replies he said.

He said that Mahesh Almeida is a young politician who started his political career as the Seethavaka P.S. Chairman. He has not only won the confidence of the people but also his fellow politicians. I therefore congratulate him on behalf of the UNP, he said.

Wheelchairs, fishing equipment, spectacles and certificates to those who completed vocational training courses were presented to mark the occasion.
