Woman succums to burn injuries

A woman who sustained burn injuries while preparing kevun during the Sinhala New Year festival died at the National Hospital on Tuesday. She suffered critical burn injuries when the kerosene stove she was using fell on her body engulfing her in flames.

The victim H. M. Karuna Herath (43) of Thimbirigaskaduwa in Negombo was the mother of a 16 year old girl.

D. I. Sujani Herath, the daughter giving evidence at the inquest said her mother was arranging the hearth on the floor to prepare the traditional Avurudhu sweetmeats. She (witness) insisted that her mother do the preparation on the table. Then both of them placed the kerosene hearth on the table and kept the oil pan on it.

The inquest into the death was held before City Coroner Edward Ahangama and a verdict of accidental death was recorded.

The post-mortem was held by AJMO Dr. P. Paranitharan. Evidence was led by Negombo Police.

Four year old S.P. Chamika Madushani Kumari of Andoluwa, Rambukkana is suffering from an Acute Heart Disease and Dr. P.D. Gunarathna, Consultant Cardiothoratic Surgeon, Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital, has recommended Surgery to save her life.

The package of treatment including surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 325,000 Madushani's father S.P. Somapala says he is unable to foot this bill due to his present financial plight.

He requests kind donors and the public to assist his daughter's cause by extending whatever financial assistance possible.

All contributions should be remitted to account No. 101-209625143-3 at the People's Bank Rambukkana branch.

Pavan needs your help

Two-year-old D. M. Charuka Ishara Pavan Dissanayake (2) of No. 176, Kaluattenagolla, Wadawala, Karandagolla, Via-Hanguranketha is suffering from a hole in the heart. Dr. K. Sivakumar, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist Apollo Hospitals, Colombo has recommended heart surgery for repair of VSD.

Pavan has been referred to Madras Medical Mission Hospital India for the surgery, which is estimated to cost Rs. 500,000. Pavan's father D.M.N. Dissanayake says his family is unable to foot this bill due to their present economic plight and requests donors and the public to assist his son's cause by making whatever financial contributions possible. All contributions should be remitted to savings account No. 1-0015-10-4226-2 at the National Savings Bank, Kandy Branch.

Visit of HMAS Kanimbla to Colombo

An Australian naval ship. HMAS Kanimbla, visited Colombo this week. The visit provided an opportunity for recreation and sightseeing in Sri Lanka, states an Australian High Commission Press release.

The Navy and Army Commanders and other senior Sri Lankan officers, together with the Leader of the Opposition, were given an official tour of the ship.

HMAS Kanimbla is a sea transport ship of approximately 160 metres in length. 350 personnel are on board, under the command of Royal Australian Navy Commander David McCourt. The ship is based in Sydney.
