Principal taken to task

P.D.A.S. Gunasekera Ratnapura group correspondent

SPC Chief Minister Mohan Ellawala took the principal of the Paligala school in Eheliyagoda, to task for not utilizing the funds allocated for the maintenance of the school, to repair the dilapidated roof of the main school hall, propped up by poles, when a spokesman of the parents, pointed out that the school hall was in imminent danger of Collapsing.

The Chief Minister had done so at aceremony held at the school for commissioning the library constructed with World-Bank aid, channelled through the education line Ministry, recently.

It had also been brought to the notice of the Chief Minister that the school has been showing a decline in terms of educational standards.

In 1997, the school obtained passes at the O/L examination for the last time. Since then the school had continuously produced poor results with only 5 passes in the current year.

The admissions to grade 1 had fallen rapidly with only 10 this year.

The quality of education had deteriorated all round and the total student population had dropped from 400 to 179. There was not a single pass at the 5th standard scholarship examination. During the past 10 years not a single student passed in English at the O/L examination.

The principal of the school had admitted having received Rs. 50,000 for the maintenance of the school. But he had not received the approval from the education dept. to use the allocation for the repair of the roof despite numerous appeals.

The Chief Minister commenting on the occasion regarding the accusations of the parents had promised them, that he would, after obtaining a report of the present situation of the school and its activities, take steps, as early as possible, to improve both the 'quality and quantity' of education in the school which he understood, had received a set back.

PC Ms. G.M. Karunapala, Siripala Kiriella had also participated in the event.
