President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a note to the Cabinet has proposed a Public Service salary increase by 50 per cent, the President's House said yesterday. The President although admitting that the Government has financial constraints which may make it difficult to implement the Tissa Devendra Commission recommendations for a salary increase in full has stressed that with the "financial assistance recently pledged by both bi-lateral and multi-lateral donors, the position would have improved at least to some extent." In a press release issued through her Media Director Janadasa Peiris, the President states that the assistance pledged, minus the IMF stand by credit, may not be more than about US dollars 3,950 million for a period of four years, a slight increase compared to the aid obtained during a comparative period under the previous Government. Still, it must be a tremendous relief to the government to at least meet some of the urgent demands, she observed. The President has also requested the publication of the salaries commission report-2002, inclusive of its recommendations and to implement this recommendation with amendments considered necessary without delay. |
