by N.U.Abdul Razzak Three of the four fishing craft that were taken into custody by the Maldive's coast guard for illegally entering the Maldives Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) were released recently after their Sri Lankan owners paid the fines imposed on them by the Ministry of Defence and National Security. The owners of Sagara Siriya -I, Amal Puthaand Sandha Ruwan Putha were imposed fines ranging from twelve thousand to fourteen thousand Maldavian Rufiyya. The crew save the skippers also was earlier released by the authorities while the skippers are due to be produced before court for illegally entering the Maldavian waters. According to Fisheries Ministry sources any fishing vessel from a foreign country should obtain permission to enter Maldivian waters from the Fisheries Ministry 48 hours before such entry, in terms of Fisheries Law. Last year two Sri Lankan boats were apprehended and released only after the owners paid the fines. |
