by Sandasen Marasinghe An attorney-at-law on Thursday complained to the Bambalapitiya police that he was assaulted by some men in khaki when he visited the scene of a road mishap in which his neighbour was involved. The lawyer W. Dayaratne told police that he was set upon by members of the Traffic police when he went with his neighbour to the scene of the incident at Dickman's Road accompanied by police officers. A traffic policeman was knocked down by the car driven by the neighbour who drove on without stopping. Later the car was traced to an address at Murugan Road, Wellawatte adjoining the lawyers residence . The Traffic policeman who was knocked down later succumbed to his injuries. However, the Bambalapitiya police claimed that they never laid hands on the Attorney but that when the driver of the car was brought to the scene he had been assaulted by members of the public. The Lawyer had tried to intervene and was assaulted in turn by the people. A special investigation is being conducted into the incident. |
