Employees fall sick inhaling repellent gas

Over 200 employees of a garment factory in Ekala were admitted to hospital yesterday after falling ill from inhaling a mosquito repellent gas used at the factory compound.

The workers, several in a critical state were rushed to Ragama and Gampaha hospitals with symptoms such as giddiness and nausea.

According to the hospital authorities the factory owners claim the mosquito repellant used was a permitted brand.

The sick employees said a thick cloud of fume was inside their building at the time they reported to work yesterday. They have complained to the factory doctor, they found it difficult to breathe and they felt giddy after inhaling the gas.

The factory doctor had persisted it was alright to continue their work until she herself personally visited the place.

The Ja-Ela police are conducting investigations.
