Relief packages for flood victims in three forms

The Social Welfare Ministry will make available three sets of relief packages for the victims of recent floods and landslides in lieu of losses suffered, Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Vijayalakshmi Jegarasasingam said.

She said that a 20 perch land and cash assistance up to Rs. 100,000 will be provided for each family who lost their home and land in the devastation. Rs. 100,000 will be provided for each family for a complete loss of their home while assistance subject to a ceiling of Rs. 40,000 will be provided for a partly damaged house.

According to reports the number of families who lost houses and lands is 3986. Families who lost houses is 9294. The number of families whose houses are partly damaged is 30260.The extent of land required to relocate all the affected families is 1113.35 hectares. The families who lost their houses and lands will be relocated in areas which are safe from landslides.

There are still 3026 affected persons remaining in 42 rehabilitation camps in Matara and Ratnapura. 2455 persons are sheltered in 30 camps located in the Ratnapura district while 571 persons remain in 12 camps in the Matara district.

The exact total of the affected families from the recent floods and landslides which hit five districts in the country is 138,973. The disaster cost 236 lives while 17 persons have been listed as disappeared. A total of 39554 houses were damaged.
