Move to increase jobs on foreign ships The Ministry of Port Development and Shipping will introduce a scheme to increase employment opportunities for local youth on foreign ships. Minister Rauf Hakeem has appointed a task force in this regard. The task force in addition to looking into the possibility of increasing employment opportunities for local youth on foreign ships will recommend to the Minister the measures to be taken to streamline the registration of ships in Sri Lanka. "Although there are several trained seamen in Sri Lanka, they find it to join foreign ships. The task force will prepare a comprehensive plan to deal with this problem and to improve the image of the Sri Lankan seafarers. They will formulate a promotional strategy in collaboration with the public and private sectors in order to encourage foreign ship management companies to employ Sri Lankans," a Ministry official said. The task force will also look into ways of improving the competitiveness of the Sri Lankan Registry of Ships. "They will prepare a strategy to apply competitive rates where necessary and to promote vessel registrations using Sri Lankan companies to market vessel registrations as a business and prepare an incentive package for such companies. Among the other responsibilities of the task force is formulate strategies to promote Sri Lankan Registry on a global basis. The task force consists of Hussain Bhaila - Chairman, Central Freight Bureau, Rohan Abeywickrema, Convener, Advisory Committee on Shipping Policy, Rohan Perera - Chairman, Ceylon Association of Ships' Agents (CASA), Capt. Ajith Peiris - Managing Director, Ceyline Holdings Ltd., B. Jayasuriya - General Manager, Mercantile Shipping Ltd, Capt. Lester Weinman - Chairman, Sri Lanka Shipping Company Ltd, Capt. Ryle Mendis, Shipping Consultant, Abeyratne Banda - Acting Director, Merchant Shipping and Shanthilal Weerakoon - Deputy Director, Merchant Shipping. |
