Will Isipatana overcome Trinity today

by Chris Dhambarage

Isipatana will face a daunting task when they confront arch-rivals Trinity College, Kandy in their Milo Schools under-19 league rugby tournament match at Longden Place today.

Isipatana are still recovering following their shock defeat at the hands of St. Anthony's College, Kandy last week. However they redeemed some of their lost prestige by overcoming Wesley College 15-10 in their previous encounter.

In contrast the Trinitians have looked quite confident and also had the credit of holding the reigning Milo 'A' division league champions St. Peter's to a 20-all draw.

Despite being pushed to the Milo division two league tournament Trinity College have certainly proved themselves with some encouraging performances to remain unbeaten in the current inter school rugby season.

The Isipatana - Trinity match was in the balance at one stage because the fixture was not included in the official handbook issued by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association.

Three years ago (2000) too, the game between Isipatana and Trinity was not played due to a dispute over the venue of the match. However this year the two schools have showed a great amount of interest to play this game and now they are set to produce sixty minutes of exciting rugby.

Last year Isipatana led by Anuranga Walpola recorded a massive 43 points to 8 win at the Pallekele Stadium which is easily the highest score recorded in the series. Trinity's previous win over Isipatana came in the year 2001 where they scored a stunning 6-3 victory at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The fixture between Isipatana and Trinity has been an annual event in the schools rugby calendar since 1981 and Trinity captained by Ravi Bandaranayake had the honour of winning the inaugural match at the Bogambara Stadium. Their biggest win in the series (17-nil) was registered in 1984 again at the Bogambara Stadium.

However Isipatana have dominated the series in the last few years and had the credit of winning the match for five successive years from 1995 to 1999. Their 20-13 triumph in 1996 was in fact the first win recorded, up in Kandy.
