Marvan completes half-century as Lanka struggle for runs

Sa'addi Thawfeeq reporting from the Caribbean

ST. VINCENT, Kingstown, Sunday-Vice captain Marvan Atapattu scored a half-century and shared a second wicket partnership of 91 with Kumar Sangakkara to enable Sri Lanka go to lunch on the second day of their 3-day tour match against a West Indies Cricket Board President's XI at 131 for four wickets at Arnos Vale ground here today. Both batsmen were dismissed before lunch leaving Tillakaratne Dilshan (4) and Tilan Samaraweera (0) at the wickets.

The Board President's XI hit back in the final hour before lunch to capture three Sri Lanka wickets for 30 runs with 18-year-old Jamaican pace bowler Jerome Taylor doing the damage with a spell of two wickets for seven runs in five overs.

Taylor who made his one-day international debut against Sri Lanka on this ground on Wednesday knocked back Atapattu's off stump with a yorker and then went onto trap Mahela Jayawardene lbw for 11 to go to lunch with figures of two for 22 off 10 overs. Jayawardene was somewhat unlucky to be given out as the ball tended to be going down the leg side.

The umpire Gary White who gave the decision then turned down a confident lbw shout against Tilan Samaraweera in the same over when the batsman offered no shot to a ball that pitched in line with the stumps.

Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara who made 41, batted freely against the West Indies bowling in the morning extending their second wicket partnership to 91 before Sangakkara holed out to deep square leg on the sweep. The left-hander batted 125 minutes and faced 81 balls hitting five fours.

Atapattu's lengthy innings came to an end at 123 when Taylor got through his defences with a yorker.

The stylish opener batted 204 minutes and faced 156 balls in his knock which comprised three fours. He completed his half-century by hitting left-arm spinner Mohamed for two fours in successive overs in 145 balls.

Dilshan was lucky to survive a catch to skipper Daren Ganga at second slip when he edged left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds playing forward.

Play commenced 30 minutes earlier than scheduled to catch up on the time lost on the first day due to rain.

In the extended morning session, Sri Lanka added 85 runs off 36 overs losing three wickets to their overnight total of 46 for one.

On the opening day (Saturday) heavy rains which lashed out at the Arnos Vale cricket ground allowed only 95 minutes play.

The start of the match was delayed by 30 minutes due to morning rain and after Sri Lanka had reached 46 for the loss of one wicket at lunch, heavy bursts of rain flooded the ground forcing the umpires to abandon play for the day.

Rain has been predicted because it is now the season for it and yestereday's showers which allowed only 18 overs to be bowled, is a sign that the two Tests between Sri Lanka and West Indies scheduled for St Lucia's on June 20 and Jamaica on June 27 could become affected.

Sri Lanka lost the important wicket of Sanath Jayasuriya for four after Hashan Tillakaratne, the Test captain had won the toss and decided to give his team the opportunity of batting first on the same pitch where the third and final one-day game was played on Wednesday.

Jayasuriya was run out in the fifth over after partner Marvan Atapattu had hesitated over a second run. Atapattu played the ball to vacant mid-on and faltered on the second run.

Meanwhile, David Bernard ran across from mid-off to field the ball and make a direct hit at the non-striker's end with Jayasuriya short of his ground. Sri Lanka lost the wicket at seven.

Atapattu joined by Kumar Sangakkara took the total to 46 by lunch with both batsmen playing the four-pronged pace attack of Darren Powell, Tino Best, Jerome Taylor and David Bernard with a great degree of comfort.

The slow outfield made boundaries hard to come by and Atapattu although driving stylishly on the front foot and finding the gaps of the off side failed to collect a single boundary in his unbeaten knock of 16 scored off 66 balls.

Sangakkara however made use of half volleys from Powell and Bernard to reach the boundary on four occasions.

He was somewhat lucky at 21 when in the last over before lunch he edged teenager Taylor to Bravo at second slip who failed to get his hands onto the ball as it sped to the third man boundary.

Sangakkara survived to make 26 not out off 32 balls and dominate a second wicket stand of 39 with Atapattu.

Sri Lanka played their possible Test batting line up with the exception of Romesh Kaluwitharana, who is recovering from an injury to his upper lip which required five stitches. Kaluwitharana was hit on the mouth while keeping wickets during the third one-day international played here on Wednesday.
