Grenade explosion injures seven

A hand grenade was hurled at the Valachchenai bazaar yesterday by an unidentified injuring seven persons.

"The grenade was hurled near the meat stall around 10.30 in the morning", Valachchenai OIC CI H.K.D.M. Podimahathaya told the Daily News. Police investigations have revealed that the bomb has not targeted at anyone. No one had been arrested in this regard so far.

Five houses from Shree FM

Shree FM has decided to build five houses for five families who were affected by recent floods and earthslips, which made over 40,000 people homeless, Shree FM announced in a recent press conference held in Colombo.

Executive Director of Shree FM Mohan Perera said that they have so far selected four families, two families from the Ratnapura district and one family each from the Hambantota and Matara districts and in the process of selecting the fifth family.

He added that they wanted to make the donation to the most deserving families and have the collected necessary information from the respective Divisional Secretariats.

The project had cost them over 2.5 million.Most of the monies have come from the allocated budget of their popular competition 'Win a house from Shree FM' and 'Shree Satkara Aramudala', a trust fund they had established two years ago to assist the drought affected in Hambantota.

Students from Japan to participate in housing project

Twenty one Japanese students from Seisen University in Japan arrived in Sri Lanka on June 9, to participate in the Habitat housing project at Munnakkara, Negombo. General Secretary of the Habitat for Humanity in Sri Lanka Godfrey Cooray told the Daily News.

He further said that the Habitat in Sri Lanka is a non-profit-making organisation incorporated in Sri Lanka, since 1994. The first house was built for the needy in the year 1995. Today there are nine affiliates working in the 25 districts. They were able to complete 2,217 houses islandwide and now 197 houses are under construction.

The ultimate vision of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty and provide homes for the homeless by constructing houses with basic amenities.

This programme will help people to uplift their communities and renovate their houses to lead a decent life, he said.
