"Every Sri Lankan Mission overseas must form an Economic Council under the Chairmanship of the Ambassador and consisting of the principal officials in that country dealing with Sri Lankan trade, promotion of tea and tourism, investment, and finding jobs overseas" said Minister of Foreign Affairs Tyronne Fernando addressing Ambassador Ananda Gunasekera and the entire staff of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Paris at the Embassy premises last week. He said this was a decision of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Overseas Business Promotion of which he was the Chairman and had been ratified by the Cabinet. "The Government is giving utmost priority to performance in the economic field of every Sri Lanka Mission overseas. Targets will be set and will have to be met within specific time frames", he further said. Fernando also stated that when he met French MPs, they had spoken about a growing tea market in France. The Economic Council of the Embassy must do its utmost to promote Sri Lankan tea in France, he emphasized. He also added that when he visited Monaco he found that a potential tourist market was not being fed with the necessary travel and tourist material, despite there being an Honorary Consul. Steps should be immediately taken by the Embassy to rectify the situation. |
