Aloka Pooja at Tantirimale

By Sarath Manulawickrema

Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited under the sponsorship of "Dinamina" and "Silumina" Newspapers inaugurated its first of the Tantirimale Annual "Aloka Pooja" programme on Poson Full Moon Day (June 14).

A large gathering of Buddhist devotees including the Mahavilachchiya Divisional Secretary Vijitha Nandakumara and other dignitaries and Government officials were present. MP W.B.Ekanayake participated as the Chief Guest.

Delivering the inaugural address, Tantirimale Viharadhipathi, Ven.Tantirimale Chandaratana Nayaka Thera commended Lake House for undertaking the annual illumination of Tantirimale Cetiya which is sanctified by an overnight resting of the sacred "Jaya Sririmahabodhiya" on its historical journey from India to Mahamevuna Uyana, Anuradhapura, several centuries ago. The Lake House, going by the example set by its founder, the late D.R.Wijewardene, has been sponsoring the "Mihintale Poson Aloka Pooja" consecutively for the last 41 years. This annual programme brought much fame and prosperity to the Mihintale sacred area. The annual "Aloka Pooja"programme, commenced this year will bring about similar results in the area of Tantirimale, stated the Venerable Nayaka Thera.
