Drifting Indian fishermen rescued

Trincomalee correspondent

Two Indian fishermen who were drifting at sea in the Northern Jaffna sea area for 12 days as a result of the outboard motor of their canoe (vallam) being defective were rescued by a group of Sinhala fishermen headed by L. G. Preethikumara who went out for fishing in that area in a multiday boat on June 7.

The two Indian fishermen were without food and water and were totally exhausted. The rescuers fed them and quenched their thirst before they were handed over to Harbour Police, Trincomalee on the 8th.

On Monday they were produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate, S. Thiyagendran.

The two fishermen Palayandi Karunanidi and Adiappam Nadakattan were sent to the Mirigama detention camp until they were sent back home through the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo.
