Members of the Consumer Affairs Authority

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake appointed the board of members for the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and the members for it's subsidiary body, Consumer Affairs Council, last Friday.

The 13 members appointed to the Consumer Affairs Authority include Mrs. Seetha Wimalasena Chairperson, Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha, Susil Siriwardena, Ms. Sagarika Delgoda, Ms. Ajitha R. Perera, M.T.A. Zain, V. Sabanayagam, Prasantha Lal De Alwis, Ravi Fernando, R.M.B. Senanayake, Dilhan Abayaratne, S.P.M. Perera, and T.M.S. Nanayakkara.

Three-member board of the Consumer Affairs Council are G.D. Kulathilaka, Hemaka De Alwis and Ranil Wijesinghe.

The CAA Act was passed in Parliament last January abolishing the Fair Trading Commission and the Department of Internal Trade.

The new Act had given wide discretion compared with its predecessors.

The Consumer Affairs Council is a significant feature of the new Act, which has jurisdiction over a wide area of consumer related, issues such as anti competitive practices and trade malpractices.

The Council is bound to hear a complaint and award its decision within 100 days, which leads to a speedy adjudication, which could only be challenged in the Court of Appeal.
