Former milo champs Isipatana out to regain lost prestige

by Chris Dhambarage

Former champions Isipatana will be out to redeem some of their lost prestige when they confront Wesley College in their Milo 'A' division league rugby encounter at Longden Place on Friday.

Isipatana's hope of regaining the Milo 'A' division league title was shattered when they suffered a shock 15-20 defeat at the hands of St. Anthony's College Kandy last week.

They began the season as one of the strong contenders but now they are really under pressure and are determined to produce an improved performance.

However the Wesleyites have also experienced mixed fortunes in the Milo 'A' Division League Tournament and they have something to prove against their rivals. In fact last year they came closer of defeating Isipatana before going down by a narrow margin in a rousing encounter. This year Wesley College have certainly made an impact and their stunning win over the Thomians is a good example of their capabilities.

The Wesleyites started the season with an impressive victory against Carey College but suffered a major setback when they lost to their traditional rivals Kingswood College Kandy in the first leg of the L.E. Blaze trophy annual fixture at Randles Hills. This time they are up against a tough opposition and will need a tremendous effort to stop the powerful Isipatana three quarters.

Meanwhile Ananda College look set to complete their fourth successive victory in the Milo 'A' division League tournament when they meet Thurstan College in another fixture at Havelock Park on Friday. The Anandians have already made their presence felt in the current season with a stunning 8-7 win over S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia and also recording big victories over Mahanama MV and Zahira College.

The key to Ananda's success this year have been their excellent ball handling where the forwards and the three quarters have performed equally well. But more importantly they have proved that they have the experience and the ability to play when the side is under great pressure.

St. Joseph's College will go in as favourites when they take on Zahira College in their Milo schools rugby encounter at Maradana on Friday.

The Josephians are fresh after their morale boosting win over Thurstan last week and will be hoping to produce a repeat performance. In another fixture Royal Panadura will play against St. Benedict's College at Kotahena.
