Singer sponsors Blue and Gold Hockey sevens

by Richard Dwight

Most welcome news it must be, both to hockey players of schools and followers of this sport, to find that the all island Schools' Blue and Gold hockey sevens is being revived to take place on Saturday June 21 at the Royal College grounds. As in the past, it's being spearheaded by the Royal College Hockey Club (RCHC) with the active sponsorship of Singer Sri Lanka. This was revealed to the media by the principal of Royal College, H.L.B. Gomes, at a briefing held at the College Conference room on Tuesday.

Gomes said that this revival, since the last schools hockey sevens was played in 1992, augurs well for hockey in schools and for the sport in general and, was very pleased to observe that schools from Jaffna too were taking part. He was grateful to Singer in coming forward to sponsor the event and hoped they would support it in the future as well. Gomes was appreciative of the role played by the media and thanked RCHC for taking pains to organise and conduct the tournament.

The Marketing Director Singer, Asita Abayasekera, said that it was a pleasure for Singer to be associated with the event, and was thankful to RCHC for giving them an opportunity to be involved. Abayasekera was of the view that our hockey in the sixties and seven ties, soared to great heights to be on par with the other leading countries, but somewhere down the line we lost our way to lag behind.

Abayasekera observed that for any sport to thrive it must have the backing of the media to engage public support and sustained efforts by sponsors, which in this particular venture will enjoy continuity from Singer.

According to the Secretary RCHC, - M.H. Subasinghe and secretary organising committee, Vasantha de Silva, Hockey too like cricket could do well in the international arena, provided we promote and foster the game at the schools level. It's with this thinking that the RCHC's Blue and Gold Schools' Hockey sevens is being revived.

Thirty two schools inclusive of Jaffna, will be taking part in this year's hockey sevens, which will become an annual event with the support of Singer. Play will commence at 7.30 a.m., on June 21 at the Royal College grounds. Matches will be worked off concurrently on two separate courts, the duration of a match will be 15 minutes, with each half confined to 7 minutes and a one minute break.

Singer trophies will be presented to the champions, first and second runner-ups, with awards for the best player and best goal keeper.
