Death of Neville de Alwis

The death occurred of former Warden of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, Neville de Alwis yesterday after a heart attack. He was 69 years old. Mr. de Alwis was warden of the College from January 1, 1983 to June 1998, the third longest serving warden, of the school.

Highly respected, de Alwis after a distinguished school career entered the Peradeniya University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a unique combination of Sinhala, Latin and Greek In 1964 he joined the Official Languages Department as a research assistant and also obtained a Bachelors Degree in Law and was called to the Bar in 1969. He joined the Attorney General's Department as Crown Counsel in 1970. In 1972 he joined the Legal Draftsman's Department. He was also a junior counsel to Dr. Colvin R. de Silva and H. W. Jayewardene, two eminent legal professionals. Later he earned a Masters Degree in Law.

He left an illustrious career in the legal profession to serve S. Thomas' College where he was known to be one of the best Warden's of the College.

Mr. de Alwis was responsible for the construction of the college gymnasium, new dormitories, the new swimming pool and more over moulding young Thomians to be the men of the future.

Mr. de Alwis was also the President of Sri Lanka School's Cricket Association from 1989 to February 1998.
