by Ananda Kannangara The Eksath Lakvanitha Peramuna (ELP) yesterday expressed their shock and grief over the ugly incidents committed by a group of JVP supporters in Tokyo at a time the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was about to address the international donor conference meeting. Speaking to the Daily News Secretary, ELP Apsara Botheju said these unruly Lankan youth should have commended the efforts taken by the Premier to receive a large sum of foreign aid to rebuild the country's economy even without the support of the President in the country. "Peace loving people will never forget the ugly incidents committed by the JVP several years ago and also the mass destruction caused by them to valuable human lives as well as millions worth of public properties. She said that when considering this nature of disastrous violent acts it is not surprising for the same JVP to stage ugly demonstrations before the international community and tarnish the country's image. Meanwhile, Galle District UNP MP Gayanta Karunatillaka vehemently condemned the attempted assault on the Chief Incumbent of the Lankaji Temple in Japan Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera by activists of the JVP during a visit by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to the temple. "This act has drawn a strong condemnation from the local Buddhist clergy as well as all other countrymen," he said. Karunatillaka also recalled the barbaric acts committed by the JVP against their own countrymen during 1988 and 1989 and said that it was a shame for the same group to disrupt a Buddhist ceremony. He said that these so-called patriotic youth had committed a disgraceful and reprehensible act which will be roundly condemned by any cultured society in the world. |
