by Kushani Ratnayake A workshop on "Technology of Application of Pesticides", will be held from June 23 to 26 at the Plant Genetic Resource Centre, Peradeniya. The proposed workshop is to bring together all stakeholders whose views are sought after and who can influence national and international policy issues pertaining to pesticides and its application especially in relation to agriculture and allied fields. "We hope that the final outcome of the workshop will lead to the establishment of co-operative relationships with the organisations working in the pesticides and environment area, and others in developing countries" the director of the Science and Technology Commission, Dr.Jayasuriya said. The workshop is intended to review the present knowledge on the technology of application of pesticides, the impact of pesticides on health, the environment and the food chain, the existing legislation governing importation and the use of pesticides and alternative technologies including bio-pesticides. In the Sri Lankan context, the workshop is expected to provide information towards the formulation of a national policy pertaining to pesticides and their application, especially in relation to agriculture. Resource persons will be drawn from various institutions in Sri Lanka and abroad. "We are inviting foreign delegates to participate in the workshop and hope that it will be a success. The workshop will grant us an opportunity to share concepts with other participants," he said. |
