Technical Committee to solve problems of landslide victims

A Technical Committee has been appointed by the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Disaster Management, on the instructions of Power and Energy Minister and Chairman of the Sub Committee, Karu Jayasuriya to solve the land related problems of the landslide victims. Representatives from the Social Welfare Ministry, National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), National Housing Development Authority (NHDA), Urban Development Authority (UDA), professional organisations such as Institute of Planners, Institute of Architects and the Army will comprise the technical committee.

The District Secretary will be the Chairman of the Technical Committee said, Social Welfare Secretary. Vijayalakshmi Jegarasasingam.

The committee will identify victims of disaster, who do not own other lands for resettlement and the committee will also identify the suitable land free from landslides. Meanwhile the Disaster Management Operation Room which operated from the Prime Minister's Office is now being operated from the Social Welfare Ministry, fifth floor, Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla. Still 3422 persons remain in 43 rehabilitation camps located in two flood affected districts. 2851 persons remain in 31 rehabilitation camps in the Ratnapura district while 571 persons are in 12 rehabilitation camps in the Matara district.

The Department of Social Services has allocated Rs.31,792,000 to provide emergency relief for flood victims. The highest amount, Rs.10,892,000 has allocated for the Ratnapura district while Rs.8,350,000 allocated for the Matara district. Rs.6,765,000 has been allocated for the Galle district.

Hundred and fortynine out of 319 landslide-prone areas have been examined by twenty multi-discipline teams. The total number of affected families in the landslide-prone areas is 900, Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Vijayalakshmi Jegarasasingam said.

She said that 471 families in four districts have been relocated after the investigations. 253 families in the Ratnapura district, 113 families in the Matara district, 97 families in the Hambantota district and another eight families in the Kalutara district had been relocated. Another 222 families have been identified as living in 'medium risk' areas.
