Top teams battle in q-finals

by Bernard Perera

The top eight teams in the soccer field in the island have qualified to play in the quarter finals of the Sharp FA Cup championships conducted by Football Federation of Sri Lanka, sponsored by Brown and Company the distributors of Sharp products. The matches are scheduled to be on June 12, 13 and 15. The only match to be played in Colombo is the game between Renown SC and Army SC, at Shalika Grounds Narahenpita.

The Negombo Youth Sports Club the premier league champions who are hoping to clinch a double this year will take on Soccer Promoters SC at Wennappuwa. In this game Negombo team is favoured to take the path to the semi-final looking through its performance.

The third fixture of this stage will also be a keen contest between last years Premier League champs Saunders SC and the current runners-up of the same Police SC. Saunders who failed to produce its top performance this year is sure to face stiff competition from Police who are in fine fettle after the recently concluded Premier League Championship.

The game gets under way at UC Grounds Kalutara on June 15. Saunders could make a comeback to upset the Police SC and may rise to bring back the past glory towards the club. The last quarter-final between Air Force and Ratnam SC too could produce a good soccer fare at Bogambara Stadium on June 15.

Both these teams fared well during the premier league, and anything could happen in this game. All in all the soccer fans in Sri Lanka are sure to witness top soccer fare during the coming week.

Quarter-finals:

June 12 - Renown SC vs Army SC at Shalika Ground, Narahenpita.

June 13 - Negombo YSC vs Soccer Promoters SC at Albert F. Peiris Stadium, Wennappuwa.

June 15 - Saunders SC vs Police SC at U.C. Ground, Kalutara. Ratnam SC vs Air Force YSC at Bogambara Stadium, Kandy.
