By Sarath Malalasekara and Asanga Warnakulasuriya A heroic Police constable who single handedly recovered the entire loot of Rs. 70 lakhs stolen from Nelum Fashions in Yatiyantota last year, was awarded Rs. 100,000 by the IGP T. E. Anandaraja yesterday. The PC (21546), W. G. Mahinda Padmasiri had fought a lone battle with six army deserters who tried to get away with the payroll of the Nelum Fashions. He was able to recover Rs. 70 lakhs, two weapons and arrested three of the robbers after his constable colleague was shot by the gang at a road block. The constable who was fortunate enough to survive five gunshots wounds which entered his left knee during operations in Batticaloa in 1995 was attached to the Yatiyantota Police where he was assigned "normal" duty. The incident took place on May 9 2002 where the management of Nelum Fashions had requested the Yatiyantota Police to provide additional Police security from Yatiyantota Bank of Ceylon branch to the factory premises. The constables, PC (10290) K.G.Nawaratne and PC (21546) Mahinda Padmasiri were assigned for the duty. The two constables were later attacked by the army deserters where PC Nawaratne lost his life during the battle. The IGP also awarded Rs. 100,000 to the wife of PC Nawaratne.
