by Manjula Fernando The Tertiary Education and Training Ministry yesterday alleged that an extremist political party was behind the recent protest campaign aimed at disrupting the entire university system. "It was unfortunate to note that these attempts are being made at a time when efforts are being made to earn for our degree a name in the local and international job market," a spokesman for the Ministry said. The Inter University Student Union moved to hold a protest week against the authorities' failure to take any measures to solve student problems. "It was reported that a extremist student union has organised a protest week in all universities. We see this move as a definite attempt by the said union, known to be a cat's paw of a political party, to disrupt the entire university system and jeopardise the education of several generations," he said. Ministry said the individual universities had been making efforts to minimise the backlog created during the insurgency of 1988-1989. Even after so many years the backlog still exists in some of the universities. "These so-called unions are again reverting to their old ways ." "These protest campaigns are deliberately programmed during exams and target projects meant to enhance the quality of education. This shows their motive behind the so-called well-meant campaigns," the spokesman added.
