National Ozone Unit (NOU) of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) donated air conditioning and refrigeration training equipment to the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Open University. Secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Thosapala Hewage handed over the equipment to Prof. Uma Coomaraswamy, the Vice Chancellor at a simple ceremony held in the university attended by ministry officials, council members, university staff and students. The equipment will be utilised for the training of environmental friendly practices in refrigeration and air-conditioning industry and to provide training in the area of recycling and recovery of refrigerants which are one of the groups of ozone depleting substance, a press release said. Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, P. D. Sarathchandra said this equipment will also support the ongoing study programmes of the department and be used in training technical personnel in the industry. The Vice Chancellor said that the Open University being a national university serves the adults and the employed in training and upgrading their skills thus offering professional development in the workplace. "In this way the university will be able to train a large number of technicians in the industry," she said.
