Minister lauds national council for Mental Health

Panadura group correspondent

Karu Jayasuriya Minister of Power and Energy said during the twenty years of war in this country, most people in the country had mental troubles because of the fear about their families, children and relations but when the present government came into office and signed the ceasefire agreement with LTTE the mental troubles of the people disappeared but there are mental patients. It is glad to know that the National Council for mental health had decided to rehabilitate mentally sick people.

He was speaking at the foundation laying ceremony for a three-storeyed rehabilitation centre for mental patients in a land adjoining the Bolgoda Lake at Galkanuwa Road, Gorakana, Panadura on Tuesday.

The 1 1/2 acre land was donated by Edwin Gunasena. Minister Jayasuriya said it was an acceptable fact that there were a large number of mental patients in the country. There is only one hospital to mental patients. According to the present situation, the government alone cannot shoulder the burden of providing all the facilities for them.

It is a commendable meritorious act of the National Council for mental health to shoulder the responsibility of rehabilitating the mental patients providing them with all medical and other facilities. Therefore the government is prepared to provide assistance whenever the council needs. Health Minister P. Dayaratne further said there should be a healthy environment in the country but in the past most people faced a series of problems and they unexpectedly became mentally ill.

The government as well as other relevant authorities must safeguard the health of the people. The human resources are the most valuable asset in the country. The national council for mental health had taken steps to construct a rehabilitation centre for mental patients. It is the responsibility of this council to rehabilitate mental patients. The Health Ministry is prepared to join hands with the national council for mental health to open more rehabilitation centres.

Professor A. Kelegama the President and Dr. Nalaka Mendis, Secretary General also spoke.

Ranjith Perera, the Chairman and Managing Director of Ranmal Holiday Resort at Bolgoda lake and the President of the Panadura Lions Club represented the Gorakana Perera family (Philanthropists).
